O Canada!
Happy Canada Day!
July 1st is Canada’s birthday. Happy birthday to all Canadians!
On July 1, 1867, Canada became one of the self-governing dominion of the British Commonwealth. The first four original provinces were: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. But as you know, Canada now consists of 10 provinces and three territories. Can you name them all?
The national anthem was originally written in French and only translated into English in 1906.
Official National Anthem in English
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Official National Anthem in French
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
There is also an Inuktitut, an Eastern Canadian Inuit language, version of the national anthem but it is not considered an official version.
