Ibrahim Maalouf, a French-Lebanese trumpet player and composer, was destined for musical greatness. The son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, Ibrahim started studying the trumpet at the young age of seven. His father invented the “quarter tone trumpet”, which allows one to accurately play the melodies of traditional Arab music. It is he who Ibrahim trained under, learning not only Arabic trumpeting, but also classical, baroque, modern, and contemporary techniques. He also played as a duo with his father from the age of nine into his teen years.
Maalouf earned degrees in classical music from both the CNR de Paris and CNSM de Paris over a period of 5 years. During this time Maalouf also entered many trumpet competitions, honing his skills to perfection. He has earned 15 awards at different competitions throughout the world. Maalouf has released several albums, all with international success, under his own label. He has said that his two most recent albums “Red and Black Light” and “Kalthoum”, both released in 2015, are closest to his heart.
Maalouf has played all over Europe and the United States. Most recently he played his first ever show in Egypt. The long awaited concert, which was attended by 7,000 Egyptian fans, was held at the pyramids. Playing in Egypt was special to Maalouf whose family has roots in Egypt.
